$5,000 – Amercian Legion, Post 95
The Community Foundation of Teton Valley was honored to award a $5,000 grant to the American Legion, Post 95 to replace the roof and repair the facade of their historic building. The Community Foundation strongly supports the preservation of this important piece of Teton Valley history.
The American Legion building at the corner of Wallace and Main in Driggs is a historic building. Built in 1940 by the Works Project Administration (WPA), it is one of only two such buildings in Teton Valley. During World War II, the building was used as an arsenal where weapons, jeeps, and small trucks were stored.
After the war, the building was converted into offices, small meeting rooms, and a large hall. For the next 50 years, the building saw innumerable uses: community suppers, dances, class reunions, Boy Scout meetings, City Council meetings, lunches for seniors, and more. Currently, it serves as a meeting place for veterans, Alcoholic Anonymous, Our Redeemer Church, and a home for Subs for Santa, as well as being available for rent for other community activities.
Sadly, this historic building has fallen into disrepair and the Driggs American Legion Post doe not have the funds for the immediate needs of replacing its leaking roof and repairing its façade. By making these needed repairs, an important piece of community history will be preserved and it will serve as a prominent, visual reminder that the people of Teton Valley honor their veterans and are grateful for their service to our country.
The funds requested will be used to help replace the building’s leaking roof and repair/repaint the damaged façade. A large group of individuals will donate their services in support of the construction and fundraising campaign for the project. The Community Foundation commends the important work of the American Legion, Post 95, in repairing the American Legion building in Driggs to preserve our community’s history, honor our veterans as well as provide services for the community and office space for organizations.
