The Community Foundation of Teton Valley announces that applications are now being accepted online for the Blake Chapman Young Eagles Flight Scholarship. This scholarship opportunity was created by a group of individuals who wanted to give Teton Valley students the chance to learn to fly. It is funded, in part, with money raised at last year’s Tin Cup Challenge, and is the first local scholarship facilitated by CFTV. The application deadline is Friday March 7th.
Offered to students on this side of the pass by Teton EAA Chapter #1049, the Blake Chapman Scholarship is similar to one that has been offered to Teton County, Wyoming students for several years. This scholarship covers the full cost of instruction and materials for a student to obtain a private pilot’s license, a value of about $8,500. Eligible applicants must be 16 years of age by May 1st of this year and must demonstrate good academic standing, community service and involvement, financial need, and a commitment to becoming a pilot. The scholarship recipient must be able to devote full attention to flight training at least four days a week during the summer.
Senior Lyons Wells from Victor, Idaho was last year`s award recipient. He completed his flight training over the summer & last fall received his private pilots licence. Lyons is planning on attending Westminster College in Salt Lake City to further his education in aviation & flight operations.
The process starts with an online application at the Community Foundation’s website (www.cftetonvalley.org); all paperwork is submitted online through the grants program of the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole (CFTV is an affiliate of CFJH) at http://www.cfjacksonhole.org/students/scholarships/. The opportunity is among those listed on the Scholarship Bulletin of Teton School District #401. Counselors Mary Mello and Debbie Woolstenhulme will work with interested students at Teton and Basin High Schools to help them complete the application.
