However, the idea of what “effective” and “appropriately engaged” mean, along with what’s expected, can be unclear and varies from one nonprofit to another.

Board members usually find it natural to support the organization’s vision and mission, and there are plenty of resources on how to handle financial oversight, their most obvious fiduciary duty. But when it comes to fundraising, partnering with the executive director, community outreach, and advocacy, effectiveness and engagement often drop off. These areas tend to be the toughest for board members and often don’t get enough support.
