The calendar has begun again and with it, fresh hopes and dreams for the new year. Our resolutions for the year ahead reflect the future we envision for both ourselves and our community. The Community Foundation’s Youth Philanthropy Program rounded out in December but continues to inspire us on both of these fronts into the new year. Now in its 8thseason, Youth Philanthropy gives back in a number of ways. During this year’s program, 32 high school seniors were introduced…

Youth Philanthropists are consistently awed by the various needs of our community. Participating Teton High School seniors rallied to fully fund counseling for Family Safety Network’s clients with a $960 award through the Community Foundation’s Youth Philanthropy Program. Family Safety’s Counseling Program fills a desperate community need by providing victims of domestic violence and sexual assault access to individual counseling sessions. The funding request of $960 was meant to bridge the gap in available funding and ensure that all victims get…

Teton High School seniors funded the Teton Valley Community Animal Shelter’s Youth Philanthropy Grant for Animal Shelter Enrichment with a $730 grant award. The Teton Valley Community Animal Shelter takes in stray and unwanted animals, caring for them while they wait to be adopted. When people visit the adoptable animals, they appreciate knowing that the animals are well cared for and happy. This can be difficult if the dogs and cats are stressed or bored. When the animals are content,…

Valley of the Tetons Library requested funds to finish the permanent Makerspace in their Driggs location during this year’s Youth Philanthropy Program. To be more functional, the library needed expanded storage, shelving, and seating to encourage creative processes. The library asked for hardware and seating to be installed and set up for use by library patrons in the community. Youth Philanthropists fully funded this grant for $1,000 due to the numerous cross-sections of the community it would serve. Three years…

Growing up in the shadow of the Tetons has impressed upon Teton High School Seniors the importance of a quick, experienced, and well-prepared response team should things go awry in the mountains. In light of their concern for Teton County’s growing population using the backcountry via horseback, four-wheelers, skis, and snowmobiles, Youth Philanthropy students awarded Teton County Idaho Search and Rescue $620 in grant funds to update some of their field equipment used by rescue teams during search missions. With…

Participating Teton High School seniors understood the power and impact of Immigrant Hope-Wyoming/Idaho’s Youth Philanthropy Grant Application immediately. There was little question that it would receive the full grant award of $960 to provide two Dreamer scholarships for present and/or former Teton High School students. DACA – Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or Dreamers, is a US government program for high school students and graduates, brought to the US as children, to obtain a renewable document which gives them the…

Teton High School seniors participating in this year’s Youth Philanthropy Program recognized the immediate impact PAWS of Jackson Hole’s Trap-Neuter-and-Return program would have in Teton Valley and chose to partially fund this grant with an award of $730. Feral cats are community cats that live in colonies. Just as we help our human residents, community cats need our assistance with food and shelter, and they need to be spayed and neutered. Without control feral populations readily grow beyond their resources.…

Critical Needs for Teton School District #401 – $2,500 There’s no doubt that the Community Foundation’s Grant Committee was holding our mission statement, to elevate lives through the power of generosity, close at hand when they opted to fully fund the Education Foundation of Teton Valley’s grant to assist low-income students in our district with basic needs to help them succeed in school. The median household income in Driggs is $44,565.00 which is nearly $11,000 below the national average, making…

Two out of every five Teton County, Idaho residents exist in or very near poverty. Many are single parents, physically disabled, or living in multi-generational households and not earning enough to pay for the area’s average cost of housing, food, transportation, childcare, and healthcare. One misstep can leave a family at the precipice of financial disaster. A single mom struggles to choose between paying her rent or the overdue electric bill. A senior’s Social Security check runs out before the…

“To lead people, walk beside them.…as for the best leaders, the people do not notice their existence. When the best leader’s work is done the people say,‘We did it ourselves!’” ―Lao Tzu The Tin Cup Challenge has led the way as Teton Valley’s biggest philanthropic event for twelve years by empowering the community to come together in support of local nonprofit organizations. From the beginning of its ministry in Teton Valley in 1993, St. Francis of the Tetons has made community service a cornerstone of its ministry. Our mission statement puts it well: as followers of Jesus, we strive to “walk humbly, patiently and kindly with our neighbors.” Early on the church reached out through informal networks to learn who might be in need. Then, members of St. Francis would offer time, muscles, and funds to provide direct assistance. Even now members continue to…

IT’S THE 90-YEAR-OLD MAN who comes to the Community Center in Driggs almost every weekday to participate in yoga or Tai Chi classes, and to have lunch. It’s the 70-year-old man escaping the cold in his car, where he spends most of his time during the winter, to read the paper, eat a warm meal, and visit with other residents. It’s the 5-year-old boys who’ve become friends because of their love of airplanes since their mom and grandmother have brought…

The Tin Cup Challenge matters for as many reasons as there are residents of Teton Valley, but here are two: one specific and one general. Specifically, the Tin Cup Challenge helps us spend more time doing what we love – which is fostering personal and community growth through the challenge of rock climbing! Fundraising is a challenge for the Teton Rock Gym. Our small staff works hard and wears a lot of hats. Being able to participate in Tin Cup helps gives us…
